Amazon has unveiled a massive $11 billion data center campus in St. Joseph County, Indiana, marking one of the largest single infrastructure investments in the company’s history and a major expansion of its artificial intelligence capabilities.

Located in New Carlisle, the sprawling facility covers approximately 1,200 acres and consists of long rows of windowless, highly secured buildings designed to support large-scale AI model training and deployment. Drone footage of the site shows a vast, modular layout built for rapid expansion as demand for computing power continues to surge.

The campus is expected to consume up to 2.2 gigawatts of electricity, an amount roughly equivalent to powering one million U.S. homes. It will also require an estimated 300 million gallons of water per year, primarily for cooling systems essential to maintaining the performance of high-density computing hardware.

Amazon says the project reflects the growing global demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure, as cloud providers race to support increasingly complex models used across industries ranging from logistics and healthcare to defense and finance. The Indiana location offers access to land, transportation corridors, and existing energy infrastructure, making it attractive for hyperscale development.

However, the scale of the project has raised concerns among local residents and energy analysts about long-term strain on the regional power grid and water resources, particularly as Indiana hosts multiple large data center projects from major technology firms. State and local officials have emphasized ongoing coordination with utilities to ensure reliability and sustainability.

The investment underscores how central AI has become to Amazon’s long-term strategy and highlights the accelerating transformation of America’s industrial landscape as digital infrastructure rivals traditional manufacturing in scale and resource demand.
