In a wide‑ranging February 2026 interview, Trump addressed fallout from federal immigration operations in Minnesota that drew national scrutiny after two fatal shootings involving federal agents. Both incidents — including the killing of a 37‑year‑old woman, Renée Good, and the later death of ICU nurse Alex Pretti — took place during a controversial surge of ICE and Border Patrol personnel responding to backlogged deportations and urban crime enforcement. 

Trump acknowledged the fallout from the Minneapolis operations, saying that while the actions against criminal illegal immigrants were necessary, lessons had been learned about how such efforts are perceived on the ground. “Maybe we can use a little bit of a softer touch,” he said, emphasizing that toughness against serious offenders must still remain part of the strategy.
