CNN reports that the person of interest detained in connection with the deadly Brown University shooting has been identified as 24-year-old Benjamin Erickson.

According to law enforcement sources cited by CNN, Erickson is a former U.S. Army infantryman originally from Wisconsin. He was located several hours after the December 13 shooting at a hotel in Coventry, Rhode Island, after investigators tracked cellphone data linked to the case.

Police detained Erickson for questioning and conducted a search of his hotel room, where they recovered two firearms—a revolver and a Glock handgun equipped with a laser sight. Authorities emphasized that the weapons were lawfully possessed and that no direct evidence tied Erickson to the shooting.

Later the same day, Erickson was released without charges after investigators determined that evidence pointed elsewhere. Officials stressed that he is not considered a suspect at this time.

The shooting on Brown University’s campus left two students dead and nine others injured. The gunman remains unidentified and at large, prompting an ongoing multi-agency investigation involving federal, state, and local law enforcement.

Authorities continue to urge anyone with information related to the attack to come forward as the search for the shooter continues.
