Providence police officials disclosed that a single tip prompted federal authorities to identify and detain a person of interest in the December 13, 2025, mass shooting at Brown University that left two students dead and nine others injured.

During a press conference, investigators explained that the individual was flagged after an anonymous tip was submitted through standard channels. Police emphasized that the tip was handled no differently than other leads initially received in the case.

According to officials, the FBI took primary responsibility for following up on that specific tip. Federal agents subsequently located and detained the individual, who was identified publicly as a person of interest.
