In a surprise political move, former New York State Assemblyman Dov Hikind has withdrawn his support from longtime ally Curtis Sliwa and endorsed former Governor Andrew Cuomo for New York City mayor.
Hikind, a respected figure in Brooklyn’s Orthodox Jewish community and a staunch advocate for Israel, told the New York Post that his decision was driven by electability — not loyalty. “I have nothing but good things to say about Curtis,” he said. “But it’s clear he can’t win.”
The endorsement marks a significant shift in the city’s political dynamics as Cuomo seeks to rebuild his reputation and position himself as the centrist alternative to far-left Democratic frontrunner Zohran Mamdani. Hikind’s backing could lend Cuomo credibility among traditional Jewish voters and moderate Democrats concerned about Mamdani’s progressive record and history of harsh criticism toward Israel.
Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels and a well-known conservative voice in New York politics, has yet to comment publicly on Hikind’s defection. While Sliwa maintains grassroots support, insiders acknowledge that Cuomo’s entry — now bolstered by Hikind’s endorsement — could reshape the electoral map, particularly in outer-borough Jewish and working-class districts.
As the race heats up, Hikind’s decision reflects a broader struggle within New York’s political landscape: whether pragmatic centrism can overcome the city’s growing far-left movement.
