Drone footage from Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse has revealed forests reduced to ash as a massive wildfire continues to burn through southern France. The blaze, which erupted Tuesday afternoon in the village of Ribaute in the Aude department, quickly spread across the rural, wooded Corbières region — an area known for its vineyards and medieval villages.

According to the environment ministry, the fire has destroyed in just 24 hours the equivalent amount of land that wildfires typically consume across France in an entire year. Officials have described the destruction as “unprecedented,” noting that the burned area is roughly the size of Paris.
