A massive fireball and explosion lit up the night sky over El Segundo, California, on Thursday, after a Chevron oil refinery — the company’s second-largest facility in the U.S. — erupted in flames, sending shockwaves across the Los Angeles area.

The blaze broke out around 9:30 p.m., prompting authorities to issue shelter-in-place orders for nearby residents. Witnesses reported feeling the ground shake moments before a fiery blast tore through the refinery complex.

“I thought we got nuked or something,” Mark Rogers told the Los Angeles Times, describing the moment of the explosion.

Drone footage, captured by videographer Brian Lutz, shows towering flames and thick black smoke billowing into the air as emergency crews worked through the night to contain the inferno.

Chevron officials have yet to release details on the cause of the explosion, but early reports indicate no fatalities. The incident remains under investigation as environmental agencies monitor air quality across surrounding neighborhoods.
