Drivers in northeastern Spain’s Catalonia region found themselves trapped in their vehicles as sudden flash floods swept through towns on Sunday, October 12, 2025. The intense downpour unleashed raging torrents of mud and water, submerging streets and sweeping away cars and debris in the towns of La Ràpita and Santa Bàrbara in Tarragona province.

Footage from the scene captured the dramatic moments as motorists struggled to navigate through rapidly rising floodwaters, desperately trying to escape the powerful current.

Spain’s national weather agency, Aemet, declared a red alert, warning that rainfall could reach up to 180 millimeters within 12 hours—one of the heaviest downpours recorded in the region this year.

Emergency responders were quickly deployed, rescuing several drivers stranded in submerged vehicles. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported despite the dangerous conditions.

Authorities continue to urge residents to stay indoors and avoid low-lying areas as weather warnings remain in effect for parts of northeastern Spain.
