A father who crashed his BMW into a wall while more than twice the legal alcohol limit—and with his children in the back seat—has been given a suspended prison sentence.
Shahzad Nawaz, 47, of Broadway, Peterborough, lost control of his vehicle in March while driving under the influence of alcohol. The impact left the car heavily damaged, but his children escaped serious injury.
Police tests showed that Nawaz had blown more than double the legal limit when officers arrived at the scene. He was subsequently charged with dangerous driving and drink driving and later entered a guilty plea in court.
On Thursday, 4 December, he was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years. As part of his sentence, Nawaz received a 12-month driving ban with an extended retest requirement. He was also ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work and pay £1,187 in costs.
Authorities say the case serves as a stark reminder of the risks and consequences of drink driving, especially when children are involved.
