A deadly multi-vehicle crash on a major downtown Los Angeles freeway early Sunday morning left one person dead and another critically injured, according to local authorities. The collision occurred at approximately 1:45 a.m. on March 16, 2026, along the northbound 110 Freeway near 6th Street, an area that serves as a key traffic corridor through the city’s central district.
Emergency responders arriving at the scene encountered a chaotic and dangerous situation involving three vehicles, including one car that had overturned and was completely engulfed in flames. Firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department worked quickly to extinguish the blaze while paramedics assessed the condition of those involved in the crash.
One victim was pronounced dead at the scene despite the rapid response from emergency crews. Another individual who suffered severe injuries was transported urgently to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims as investigators work to notify family members.
Video footage obtained by KTLA captured the dramatic aftermath of the collision, showing the overturned vehicle burning intensely in the middle of the freeway while emergency personnel worked around the wreckage. Flames and heavy smoke filled the roadway as firefighters attempted to bring the fire under control and prevent further hazards for responders.
Due to the severity of the crash and the emergency response efforts required, officials issued a SigAlert affecting traffic routes through downtown Los Angeles. Portions of the northern span of the nearby 101 Freeway were also impacted as authorities temporarily closed lanes to allow firefighters, paramedics, and investigators to safely manage the scene. The alert has since been lifted and traffic flow has gradually returned to normal.
Investigators from the California Highway Patrol are currently working to determine the cause of the collision. Officials will examine multiple factors, including vehicle speeds, road conditions, and possible impairment or driver error, as part of the ongoing investigation.
Multi-vehicle crashes during overnight hours remain a serious concern for highway safety officials, particularly on high-volume urban routes where traffic speeds can fluctuate dramatically and visibility conditions may vary. Authorities urge drivers to remain alert, maintain safe following distances, and exercise caution, especially when traveling late at night or in areas with limited visibility.
As investigators continue to gather evidence from the crash site, officials are expected to release additional information once the circumstances surrounding the deadly incident become clearer.
