Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has publicly pushed for the annexation of large parts of Gaza up to the so-called Yellow Line, arguing that this step would leave Palestinians confined to a small, overcrowded and heavily damaged remaining area. In remarks made during a September 2026 Ynet podcast, he framed the move as a way to make clear that there is little future left in the territory, aligning with his long-held view that removing any realistic hope of rebuilding or recovery is the most effective path to encouraging people to seek lives elsewhere. The Yellow Line itself stems from the post-2025 ceasefire arrangements and currently places roughly half to more than 60 percent of Gaza under Israeli military control, with reports of gradual further expansion. Smotrich paired the Gaza proposal with calls for similar operations in the West Bank modeled on the Gaza campaign and for annexing territory in southern Lebanon up to the Litani River, all timed ahead of Israel’s October elections.

These statements reflect a consistent approach from the far-right minister, who has previously spoken of concentrating Gaza’s population in limited zones so that despair would naturally prompt relocation efforts. By declaring the annexed areas “ours” and leaving the rest in its current ruined state, Smotrich presents the outcome as both a security necessity and a practical solution that would push residents to look for alternatives outside the Strip. The comments have drawn sharp attention because they come from a senior coalition figure and raise immediate questions about how far such policies could advance, what international responses might follow, and whether the conditions already existing along the shifting Yellow Line are already producing the pressures he describes. As election season intensifies, the remarks underscore deep divisions over the long-term future of Gaza and the broader conflict.
