Stunning drone footage has captured the scale of a massive fire that tore through an abandoned timber plant in Emporia, Virginia, sending towering flames and thick smoke into the sky and spreading into nearby wooded areas before firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control.

The fire broke out Thursday at the recently closed Georgia-Pacific plywood plant, which ceased operations in May and was officially shuttered in July 2025. The inferno burned intensely for hours, with residents reporting that the heat from the flames could be felt across the city. Video from above shows the structure fully engulfed as fire spread beyond the facility’s footprint into surrounding vegetation.

Fire crews from multiple departments responded to the scene, working for several hours to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further into nearby neighborhoods. Officials confirmed that no injuries were reported, crediting the swift response and coordinated firefighting efforts for avoiding a larger disaster.

The fire has renewed attention on the challenges facing communities with large, abandoned industrial sites. The closure of the Georgia-Pacific plant resulted in the loss of approximately 550 jobs, dealing a significant blow to the local economy and leaving behind a vacant structure that authorities now say poses safety and security risks.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. While officials have not confirmed foul play, public reaction has ranged from concerns about possible arson to praise for first responders who worked through dangerous conditions to contain the blaze. Investigators are expected to release more information once the cause is determined.
