Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced Wednesday that the Department of Transportation (DOT) will take over management of Washington, D.C.’s Union Station from Amtrak as part of a push to revitalize the nation’s capital transit hub.
At a press briefing, Duffy framed the move as an effort to restore Union Station’s historic stature while addressing pressing challenges. “Make train travel great again,” he declared, outlining plans for greater federal investment, improved services, and reduced homelessness in and around the facility.
The transfer of control also comes as federal troops continue to crack down on crime in D.C., with Union Station identified as a key area in need of enhanced safety and security.
Supporters of the plan say DOT oversight will bring more accountability and modernization to the station, which serves tens of thousands of commuters and travelers each day. Critics, however, may question the federal government’s expanded role in local transit management.
