WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump pushed back against criticism that his administration has not taken enough action against Russia, pointing to economic measures that he says have already cost Moscow hundreds of billions of dollars.
During an exchange with a reporter who claimed there has been "no action" since he took office, Trump responded:
“Would you say that putting secondary sanctions on India… That cost hundreds of billions of dollars to Russia. You call that no action? And I haven’t done phase two yet or phase three.”
Trump did not specify what additional measures — referred to as “phase two” or “phase three” — might include.
The administration has previously highlighted sanctions as a key tool in its foreign policy, arguing they weaken Russia’s ability to fund its strategic objectives. Still, questions remain over how far the U.S. will go in escalating pressure on Moscow.
