A Russian ballistic missile attack struck a residential district in Kharkiv, Ukraine, causing widespread destruction and civilian casualties in one of the deadliest strikes on the city this year. The attack occurred on January 2, 2026, when missiles hit a densely populated area, leveling a five-story apartment building and severely damaging nearby shopping centers and a hospital.
Video footage from the scene shows a massive explosion plume rising above city streets filled with civilian traffic, followed by debris scattered across the neighborhood. Emergency crews rushed to pull survivors from the rubble as fires burned through the remains of the collapsed structure.
Ukrainian officials report that at least five people were killed, including a three-year-old child, and more than 25 others were injured. Several victims remain hospitalized, with at least one person listed in critical condition. The blast wave shattered windows across multiple blocks and left hundreds of residents displaced.
Authorities have identified the weapons used as two Russian Iskander ballistic missiles, based on forensic evidence collected at the impact sites. Despite this, Moscow has denied responsibility for the strike, a claim Ukrainian officials reject, citing trajectory analysis, debris fragments, and launch detection data.
The attack has drawn renewed condemnation as another example of civilian areas being targeted amid the ongoing war. Kharkiv, located near Ukraine’s northeastern border, has repeatedly come under fire, but this strike stands out for its destruction of purely civilian infrastructure.
As rescue operations continue, Ukrainian leaders warn that the use of ballistic missiles against residential neighborhoods underscores the ongoing threat to civilian life and the urgent need for sustained international pressure and defensive support.
